Practice Practice Practice

November 2021
Art making is a marathon, not a sprint. This body of work stems from a memory of my middle school violin teacher. He said on numerous occasions, “Don’t practice until you get it right. When you get it right practice.” More than thirty years later, I am beginning to understand what he meant.
I am a full-time elementary music and art teacher. I love my work, but it leaves little time for long sustained blocks of time to create work. With this show in mind, I created a small focused practice that I could do in 30-minute increments, very similar to practicing very specific technical etudes on the violin. I focused my drawings on color exploration, borrowing from Josef Alber’s homage to the square series, limiting myself to 3-4 colors per drawing.
